Enjoy a magical night sky hidden between Tanzania’s two tallest mountains, Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru. Be in awe at nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies as oastronomy guides lead you across the equatorial sky through the lens of Tanzania’s largest telescope. Watch Mt. Kilimanjaro erupt with celestial light as stars, planets, or the Moon rises above its distant peak.
Mt. Meru Astronomical Observatory (MMAO) is Tanzania’s most accessible, and one of the largest observatories in East Africa. Located just 35 minutes from Arusha city centre and 10 minutes from Usa River, the observatory sits just adjacent to the gate of Arusha National Park in the foothills of Mt. Meru, where the dark venue is an ideal setting for stargazing. At more than 1,350 metres above sea level, the MMAO observatory offers crisp mountain air and clear views of the night sky.
Tours begin after sunset and last approximately 75 minutes. Our friendly and well informed astronomy guides with red lamps will help preserve your night vision as you settle into the surroundings. Using laser pointers, our guides will trace constellations, reveal the path of the Milky Way, and share stories from the night sky before introducing you to our 12-inch Cave-Cassegrain telescope, the largest telescope in Tanzania, and our computerized 10-inch Dobsonian telescope.
Throughout the experience, our guides will bring the universe closer through engaged storytelling, and explain the science behind what you see. Depending on the season and sky conditions, you may observe planets, the Moon, bright star systems, nebulae, star clusters or galaxies. Cozy blankets, coffee, tea and hot chocolate are provided to keep you warm throughout the evening.
Located on the equator, stargazers will be able to access both the Northern and Southern sky. Unlike destinations at higher latitudes, the skies here offer views of stars and constellations from both hemispheres, allowing visitors to experience a wider expanse of the night sky throughout the year.

Meru Astronomical Observatory’s mission to spark curiosity, passion and a love for science and astronomy among as many Tanzanian students, teachers and schools as possible. Through teacher training programmes, astronomy ambassadors and astroscience clubs, MMAO has already reached thousands of students across Tanzania, helping to make astronomy more accessible, inspiring the next generation of Tanzanian scientists.
